The short version
- Mangools is a keyword-research tool with extras. Ahrefs is a research platform. They are not really competing for the same job.
- For a blogger or solo founder doing keyword research on one site, Mangools is usually enough, and costs a fraction of Ahrefs.
- Ahrefs’ backlink index is the capability Mangools cannot approach — and the reason professionals pay the difference.
- Mangools does not publish machine-readable plan prices, so budget from their pricing page directly rather than from any blog post, including this one.
The instinct when comparing these two is to frame it as "cheap versus good", which is unfair to Mangools and unhelpful to you. Mangools is a genuinely well-made product that decided not to compete on data depth. Whether that trade works depends almost entirely on the size of the site you are working on.
The short answer
Fit for your workflow
Mangools if you have one small site. Ahrefs the moment it becomes your job.
Mangools is the better buy for a solo operator doing keyword research on a blog or a small business site — cheaper, faster to learn, and sufficient for the decisions at that scale. Ahrefs becomes correct as soon as you are making decisions that money depends on, or working across multiple sites, or doing anything with links.
- Blogger or solo founder, one site
- Mangools. You will not run into its limits for a long time.
- Freelance SEO with clients
- Ahrefs Lite at minimum — clients ask questions Mangools cannot answer.
- Anyone doing link building
- Ahrefs, no contest.
- Budget is genuinely zero
- Neither. Start with Search Console and Ahrefs Webmaster Tools — see the free stack.
Pricing
Mangools publishes tier names but does not render plan prices in a machine-readable form, so we are not quoting numbers we could not read ourselves. Check their pricing page directly. Ahrefs figures were read from the vendor.
We would rather show you a gap than a guess. Plenty of comparison pages will confidently quote Mangools prices lifted from a blog post two years old; that is precisely the practice this blog exists to avoid. The tier structure is Basic, Premium and Agency, all tools included on every plan, with extra seats available.
Capability comparison
Mangools scores 2 on keyword research because that is the product. Depth per cell still favours Ahrefs across the board.
Where Mangools is genuinely better
- Interface. It is the most pleasant tool in the category to actually use, and that is not a trivial advantage when you are not an SEO.
- Keyword difficulty presentation. Hard to misread, which matters when the person reading it is making the decision.
- Price, by a wide margin.
- Time to first useful answer. Minutes, not an afternoon.
Where it runs out
- Link data. The index is small. For competitive link analysis it is not adequate.
- Scale. Large sites and agency portfolios exceed what it was designed for.
- Technical depth. For serious auditing you want Screaming Frog regardless of which suite you buy — see the crawler comparison.
The useful way to think about it: Mangools answers "what should I write about". Ahrefs answers "why does that page rank higher and what differences are relevant to my site". If you only ever need the first question answered, paying four times more for the second is waste.
Neither of these overlaps with what we make
We have no keyword database and no link index, so this comparison sits entirely outside what our tool does. Pick whichever fits, then deal with implementation separately.
