The short version
- Ahrefs Webmaster Tools is free and gives real audit and backlink data — for domains you verify only.
- The hard boundary is the same as the whole free-versus-paid line: your own sites free, competitors paid.
- Ahrefs Starter at $29/mo is the cheapest genuine step up; Lite at $129/mo is the first full tier.
- For a single site owner who also uses Search Console, the free tier covers a surprising amount.
Ahrefs Webmaster Tools is unusually generous for a free product from a company whose entire business is selling access to an expensive index. It exists because verified site owners are good prospects, and the result is a genuinely useful free tool with one very clear limitation.
What the free tier includes
Every "No" in that middle column is about somebody else’s site. That is the entire commercial logic: your own data is cheap for Ahrefs to give away because it builds goodwill with people who will eventually want competitor data, which is the thing that costs money to produce.
When free is enough
Combine Ahrefs Webmaster Tools with Search Console and the free tier of Screaming Frog and you have: real query and position data, index coverage, a cloud site audit, a configurable local crawl, and a view of who links to you. For a single site owner working through technical and content improvements, that genuinely covers the work for a long time.
It stops the moment you ask a comparative question. "Why does that competitor rank above me" is not answerable with any combination of free tools, and no amount of cleverness works around it.
Which paid tier to step up to
Read from the vendor pricing page on the date shown. Extra seats are charged separately on every tier.
Starter at $29/mo is the cheapest genuine entry into competitor data and is a reasonable first step for a solo operator. Lite at $129/mo is the first full tier, with 5 projects, 750 tracked keywords and 100,000 crawl credits. For most people the jump from free should be to Starter rather than straight to Lite — establish that you use it before quadrupling the cost.
What the free tier is actually for
It helps to be clear-eyed about why this exists. Ahrefs gives away data about your own site because verified site owners are the people most likely to eventually want data about everyone else’s, and the index is expensive to build but cheap to query once built. That is a rational trade for both sides rather than a trick.
The practical consequence is that the free tier is genuinely complete for what it covers, not deliberately hobbled. Combined with Search Console for first-party query data and the free tier of Screaming Frog for configurable crawling, a single-site owner has a technical picture that would have required a substantial subscription a few years ago. See the full free stack.
One limitation worth anticipating: verification is per domain and the free tier is scoped to domains you can prove you own. That makes it excellent for your own portfolio and useless for the question most people eventually have, which is about somebody else’s site. The moment a competitor enters your analysis, the free tier stops being relevant — and that transition is usually what prompts the upgrade rather than any limit you hit on your own data.
Verify your site even if you never upgrade
Ahrefs Webmaster Tools costs nothing and gives you backlink data Search Console reports only superficially. There is no reason for any site owner not to have it set up alongside Search Console and Bing Webmaster Tools.
