The short version
- Three plugins are worth considering: Rank Math, Yoast SEO and AIOSEO. SEOPress is a credible fourth.
- Rank Math has the most capable free tier. Yoast has the best support. AIOSEO has the best local and site-count licensing.
- Install exactly one. Two SEO plugins produce duplicate tags and conflicting sitemaps.
- The plugin handles maybe a fifth of WordPress SEO. Budget your attention accordingly.
Two things get lost in the endless ranking of these plugins. The top three are all good enough, and the plugin decides maybe a fifth of whether your site ranks. So the choice is worth ten minutes, and the rest of your attention belongs somewhere else entirely.
The shortlist
All three also have free versions on the WordPress plugin directory. Prices read from vendor pages on the date shown.
1. Rank Math — best free tier, best value
Redirects, a 404 monitor, Search Console integration, configurable schema and multiple focus keywords, all without paying. PRO at €95.88/year covers unlimited personal sites. The trade is a dense settings interface with a lot of ways to change something you did not mean to change. Full comparison in Rank Math vs Yoast.
2. Yoast SEO — best support, safest defaults
Fewer options, better documentation, properly staffed support. Premium at $118.80/year ex VAT bundles Local, Video and News SEO plus a Google Docs seat. The redirect manager — which offers to create a redirect when you delete a post — prevents more real traffic loss than any other single feature in this category.
3. AIOSEO — best for multi-location and agencies
Site-count licensing from 1 to 100 sites, the deepest multi-location local SEO of the three, strong WooCommerce handling and an internal link assistant at the Pro tier. Priced highest per single site at $250/year for Basic.
Also credible: SEOPress
SEOPress is a well-regarded fourth option with a clean interface and a reputation for not upselling inside the admin. If the constant promotional notices in the bigger plugins irritate you, it is worth a look.
What the plugin actually controls
Everything in the lower half of this table typically matters more than everything in the upper half — and no plugin does any of it.
This is the honest shape of WordPress SEO. The plugin closes the gap between "no SEO" and "the technical basics are correct". That is a real and necessary step, and it takes one afternoon. After that the plugin is done and the remaining work is content, templates and links — indefinitely.
A sensible setup sequence
- Install one plugin. Rank Math if budget is zero, Yoast if the site owner is non-technical.
- Set titles and meta description templates once, at the post-type level, rather than page by page.
- Submit your sitemap in Search Console and Bing Webmaster Tools.
- Turn on the redirect manager and leave it on. This is the highest-value setting in the whole plugin.
- Validate a sample of pages in the Rich Results Test — schema that does not validate does nothing.
- Stop configuring. Go and work on content and internal links.
What we do, and why it is not this
We build an MCP server for codebase-level SEO work. It is not a WordPress plugin and does not replace one. On WordPress it is useful for themes, templates and content — the lower half of that table — not for sitemaps and admin-panel schema.
